Disaster Recovery

Disaster recovery (DR) in the context of information technology (IT) refers to the process and set of tools and procedures to recover or continue essential IT systems and data after a disruptive event. Disasters can take various forms, including natural disasters, cyberattacks, hardware failures, or human errors. The goal of a disaster recovery plan is to minimize downtime and data loss, ensuring business continuity.

  1. Risk Assessment:
    • Identify Potential Risks: Evaluate potential threats and vulnerabilities to IT systems.
    • Impact Analysis: Assess the potential impact of different disasters on IT operations.
  2. Business Impact Analysis (BIA):
    • Critical Systems and Data: Identify and prioritize critical IT systems and data.
    • Recovery Time Objectives (RTO) and Recovery Point Objectives (RPO): Define acceptable downtime and data loss thresholds.
  3. Backup and Data Replication:
    • Regular Backups: Perform regular backups of critical data and systems.
    • Offsite Storage: Store backup data in an offsite location to protect against on-site disasters.
